In November 2013 the Newport History Society produced a report on their research on a bank and ditch between the fields recorded as “Old Hall Field” (to the W) and “Black Butts” (to the E) on the Tithe Maps for Church Aston and Chetwynd Aston respectively. Their report, now also a Shropshire Council Heritage and Environment Record, is here as a PDF.

  • An Exciting Set Of Finds By The Field Archaeology Group
    July 29th, 2021 in Newsletter

An Exciting Set Of Finds By The Field Archaeology Group A new site (there I will refer to it as site 3) near Newport is yielding some very fascinating finds as will be seen from the following e-mails from Julian. They have been sent by him to keep those involved with the metal detecting and field walking informed. The content of the e-mails has been adjusted in order to remove any identification of site 3 and because of the importance it has to local, and national, history. (Bryan Lloyd)…

  • 81-83 High Street Research Moves on…again
    July 14th, 2021 in Newsletter

Further to our newsletter report of May 2014 regarding our new image of the High Street (donated by member Kath Crewe). We now find more evidence from the Picken Papers which Linda Fletcher & Heather Cooke are working on. Just to remind ourselves – the original image showed 81-83 High Street as a jetted building with a plain, rendered finish. The new building has a new turret, the first floor jetty is at a different height and the window sizes have changed. For new members, the Picken…

  • 81 High Street Turret
    July 14th, 2021 in Newsletter

Linda has noticed that there is a difference between the  turret of 81 High Street from the mid 20th century to today. Can you spot the difference? Some thing new has been added – well four of them although you can only see three? Its interesting that we think that the fronts of buildings have been there for ever, and then we think: “Where did that come from?”

She became the leader of this group and they re- searched and produced detailed reports on over 3o historic build- ings in the…

  • Broadhill Survey
    April 27th, 2015 in Newsletter

Interim Report! Julian Meeson – 27 April 2015 Introduction! The area investigated by the Newport History Society lies to the east of Lindore Wood. It is comprised of three fields (only two of which could be surveyed, due to the third being waterlogged), which at the time of the investigation had been ploughed and re-seeded with grass seed, to return the fields to pasture. The top soil was still clearly visible at the time, which made it possible to field-walk the site, as well as undertaking…

  • The 350th Anniversary of the Great Fire of Newport 1665
    April 23rd, 2015 in Newsletter

A memo written in the Newport Parish Register by Thomas Munk, with transcript. Shropshire Archives ref: P207/A/1/1 The year before the Great Fire of London, Newport had its own Great Fire. In 1665 Newport was a busy market town. It was very crowded. The streets were narrow and dusty. Many of the houses were made of wood and very close together. Inside their homes, people used candles for light and cooked on open fires. Fires were also used to make many things that we make in factories these…
