In November 2013 the Newport History Society produced a report on their research on a bank and ditch between the fields recorded as “Old Hall Field” (to the W) and “Black Butts” (to the E) on the Tithe Maps for Church Aston and Chetwynd Aston respectively. Their report, now also a Shropshire Council Heritage and Environment Record, is here as a PDF.

An Exciting Set Of Finds By The Field Archaeology Group A new site (there I will refer to it as site 3) near Newport is yielding some very fascinating finds as will be seen from the following e-mails from Julian. Caroline Davies of Davies White & Perry has given permission for the History Society to photograph and publish another of her pictures. This one is a tinted engraving of the High Street in 1857. The occasion is the celebrations at the time of the coming of age of Thomas Fletcher-Boughey on 25th April 1857.The painting was done by Henry Lark Pratt (1805–1873) who who trained in the porcelain industry, but did many paintings chiefly of Staffordshire and Derbyshire landscapes and…

Further to our newsletter report of May 2014 regarding our new image of the High Street (donated by member Kath Crewe). We now find more evidence from the Picken Papers which Linda Fletcher & Heather Cooke are working on. Just to remind ourselves – the original image showed 81-83 High Street as a jetted building with a plain, rendered finish. Linda has noticed that there is a difference between the turret of 81 High Street from the mid 20th century to today. Can you spot the difference? Some thing new has been added – well four of them although you can only see three? Its interesting that we think that the fronts of buildings have been there for ever, and then we think: “Where did that come from?”
