Talk: The History of OS Benchmarks

RDHS welcomes Anthony Rowley to talk to us on Ordnance Survey Benchmarks dating from 1857-1961.  He will use local examples and explain where these marks exist and why. Please note the Talks are now on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Susan Miles' Room (Upstairs) at Cosy Hall.

Christmas Quiz

The Swan Inn Lower Bar, Newport, Shropshire

Every year NDHS Members and their quests celebrate Christmas with a get-together accompanied by a topical quiz.  Join us for a drink and fun for the festive season.  This year we will be using the Swan Lounge to ensure everyone can enjoy the voice of the Quiz Master.  Refreshments will be provided by participants and coordinated nearer the time by committee members.  There is a prize for the winning team and no forfeits for the rest.

600 Years of Burials at Longford

Dr Cathryn Ross-Talbot will be presenting an extract of her dissertation on burial practices over the past 600 years and focus on a local case study of the graves, vaults and memorials at Longford.  This is a very local view of historical manuscripts, heraldry and excavation records with a genealogical perspective from her research.  It is a poignant reminder and insight into the lives of those who lived and died here before us. Please note the Talks are now on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Susan Miles' Room (Upstairs) at Cosy Hall.

Fiona Sheridan is one of the NDHS Committee members and researcher.  She has studied the medical treatment options in Newport in the 19th Century and the efforts made to improve public health through a better water supply and sewage disposal facilities.  Come and listen to her fascinating talk that might make you squirm in your seat.

We are pleased to welcome back Wendy Palin, Chair of the Wellington History Group, who talked to us in November last year on the story of Mr Walker behind the Walker Works at Donnington.  In this talk, she is going to expand on his legacy and look at who was to inherit and how his wealth was used to benefit the area.
