The Sheriffhales Roman investigation was carried out by members of the Newport History Society on the 14th November 2013. It took place in the field where the ‘Sheriffhales Roman Coin Hoard’ was found by Mr Terry Hayward on the 2nd August 2009. The aim of the survey was to locate the site of the hoard and re-excavate it in an attempt to find further coins and pottery related to the original hoard. A new historic object has been loaned to Newport Heritage Centre. This is a wooden plaque, which was displayed in ancient times above the door of the town crier’s house. It was originally given by Mrs Mary Bennett to Bill Goldsborough (Newport Urban District Council) and has been loaned to us by his daughter, Mrs Marjorie Cooper. At least as early as 1979 a group of local people, who were interested in history, were looking at the topography of the town and gathering together artifacts which they had found on their Sunday walkabouts.
